An Introduction to Chakra Balancing [article]

Everything is energy – and your body is no exception; we are more than just our physical bodies. We occupy many energy fields and we experience this energy through our emotions, thoughts, desires, instincts and intuition. Our attitudes and behaviours are affected by our chakras and when we learn to work with these energy centres, we are able to recognize where we need healing and we learn how to live in harmony with our highest good.

The word Chakra comes from the ancient Sanskrit language and literally translates to “wheel”. With this in mind we can think of chakras as wheels of energy and they are located in specific places in and around our bodies.

In the chart below you will see the 7 main chakras, where they are located and how we experience their specific meanings:

Quite simply, when our chakras are balanced and working well we feel good! When they are out of balance we experience challenges and discomfort in our lives. For example, if we feel overcome with self-doubt and lack motivation, our solar plexus chakra is out of balance. If we feel insecure and afraid of having our basic needs met then we are not grounded and our root chakra is out of balance. If we feel unheard and unable to communicate effectively then our throat chakra is out of balance. If we feel alone in the world and out of touch with the divine flow of the universe then our crown chakra is out of balance, and so on.

There are many ways that we can work with the energies of our chakras to bring about balance and well-being and one of the most effective ways is through meditation.

Meditation allows us to focus the mind and open our intuition. This allows life force energy to flow though us more effectively and this is when healing can take place. When we allow our focus to fall on our chakras we can begin to feel exactly where they are out of alignment and we are able to consciously bring our chakras back into balance by using the power of intention.

Take a moment to connect with your chakras by setting the intention and allowing the energy to flow. Notice how your body feels and notice what comes to mind. Breathe consciously and allow thoughts to come and go without attaching to them. Work your way up from your root to your crown and intend for each chakra to be cleanses and balanced.
